FAQ

What does it work out?

The tip, the total with the tip added, and what each person owes when the total is divided evenly. Tip is bill × percentage; the per-person figure is the total divided by the number of people.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Enter whichever you intend to tip on — the tool applies the percentage to the number you give it. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common and defensible, since tax is not part of the service. On a large bill in a high-tax area the difference is real money, so it is worth being deliberate rather than tipping on whatever total the card machine shows.

Does it split unevenly if one person ordered more?

No. It divides the total equally by the number of people. For an uneven split, work out each person's share of the bill separately and apply the tip percentage to each — the simple even split is the common case and the one this tool handles.

What percentage is normal?

It depends entirely on where you are, and the tool takes no position on it. Tipping norms differ sharply between countries — in some, service is included by law or convention and additional tipping is unusual; in others, staff wages depend on it. Check local practice rather than exporting the habits of wherever you are from.

What if service is already included?

Then the "service charge" or "service compris" line on the bill is the tip, and adding another percentage on top means paying twice. Look for it before reaching for a calculator — some venues print it and still leave the tip line blank.

How should I handle rounding?

Rounding up to a convenient number is normal and the tool leaves that to you — it does not round the per-person figure to a tidy amount. When splitting, rounding each share up slightly is the usual way to avoid ending up short at the table.

Does the number of people affect the tip amount?

No. The tip depends only on the bill and the percentage; the headcount only changes how the total is divided. Set people to one to see the undivided figures.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The arithmetic runs in your browser.
