FAQ
Where do the exchange rates come from?
Frankfurter, which republishes the European Central Bank's reference rates. The ECB publishes these once per working day, so they are an official daily benchmark rather than a live market feed.
Are the rates live?
No, and it would be misleading to imply otherwise. The ECB updates once each working day, and this site caches the response for up to 24 hours on top of that. For converting a receipt, budgeting a trip or sanity-checking an invoice, that is fine. For anything where intraday movement matters, use a trading platform instead.
What happens at weekends and on holidays?
No new reference rates are published, so you will see the most recent working day's figures. A conversion done on a Sunday is using Friday's benchmark.
Why doesn't my bank give me this rate?
Because this is a mid-market reference rate — the midpoint between buying and selling — and almost nobody transacts at it. Banks, card networks and bureaux add a spread, and often a fee on top. Expect to receive less than the figure shown here; the gap is how the service is paid for. Comparing a provider's quote against this rate is a good way to see what their margin actually is.
Is this tool as private as the others on the site?
Almost, with one honest exception. The conversion itself happens in your browser, but the rate table has to be fetched from our server, which passes on the base currency you selected — so the amount you are converting never leaves your device, while the currency pair is visible in the request. Every other calculator in this cluster is fully local.
Which currencies are covered?
Whatever the ECB reference set includes — the major world currencies and the European ones. It is not exhaustive: thinly traded, pegged and restricted currencies are frequently absent, and if a currency is missing that is the reason.
Why is a converted amount slightly different from another site?
Different source and different timing. A site using a live market feed, a different provider, or a rate captured at another moment will disagree slightly. None of them is wrong; they are quoting different things.
Can I rely on this for accounting or tax?
Check what your tax authority requires first. Many mandate a specific rate for a specific date — often their own published rate or a central bank's on the transaction date — and a convenient converter is not automatically the one they accept.
