FAQ
Which scale does this use?
The US unweighted 4.0 scale. A and A+ are both 4.0, A− is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, B− is 2.7, C+ is 2.3, C is 2.0, C− is 1.7, D+ is 1.3, D is 1.0, and F is 0.
How are credits taken into account?
Each course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours; the GPA is the sum of those products divided by the total credits. A five-credit course therefore moves your average considerably more than a one-credit course with the same grade — which is why entering credits accurately matters more than entering every course.
Why does A+ give 4.0 rather than 4.3?
Because this is the unweighted scale, where 4.0 is the ceiling. Some institutions do award 4.3 for an A+, and some cap the GPA at 4.0 while still recording the A+ separately. If yours awards above 4.0, this calculator will read low for you.
Does it handle weighted GPA for honours or AP classes?
No. Weighted scales add a bonus — often a full point — to advanced courses, and the size of that bonus and which courses qualify are set by each school. Enter the base grade here and treat the result as your unweighted GPA.
What about pass/fail, withdrawals or transfer credits?
None of them are modelled. Institutions differ on whether a pass counts toward credits without affecting GPA, how a withdrawal is recorded, and whether transferred credits carry their grade. Check your registrar's rules before assuming.
Why is my official GPA different from this?
Usually one of the above: a different point for A+, a weighted scale, repeated-course policies that replace rather than average a grade, or courses excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. The arithmetic here is standard; the institutional rules around it are not.
Can I work out what I need next term?
Indirectly. Enter your completed courses plus hypothetical future ones and adjust the grades until the projected GPA reaches your target. Note that the more credits you have already banked, the less any single term can move the average.
Is my transcript data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is stored or uploaded.
